NREMT Paramedic (NRP)
National Registry Paramedic certification — the hardest NREMT exam
The NREMT Paramedic (NRP) is the gold standard credential for advanced life support providers in the United States. Most states require NREMT-P for paramedic licensure. It demonstrates mastery of advanced airway management, pharmacology, cardiac arrest protocols, and complex patient assessment at a nationally recognized standard.
Who This Is For
Paramedic program graduates seeking National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic certification — the national credential for ALS providers.
How This Differs from the Entry Exam
The NREMT-Basic (EMT) exam is typically your first NREMT assessment — a computer-adaptive test covering BLS-level competencies. The Paramedic exam is in a different category: it's longer, more complex, and covers advanced interventions, pharmacology, 12-lead interpretation, and ALS decision-making that require deep clinical knowledge. Where the EMT exam might run 70–120 questions, the Paramedic exam runs up to 150 questions on the cognitive component, plus a psychomotor evaluation.
What's Covered
Topic breakdown — full content details are in development. Scout is researching official blueprints.
Airway, Respiration, and Ventilation
Advanced airway management: RSI, video laryngoscopy, surgical airway, CPAP/BiPAP, and ventilator management.
Cardiology and Resuscitation
12-lead interpretation, dysrhythmia recognition and management, ACLS protocols, cardiac arrest care, and STEMI identification.
Trauma
Multi-system trauma assessment, hemorrhage control, spinal motion restriction, burn management, and traumatic arrest.
Medical Emergencies
Neurological emergencies, respiratory emergencies, endocrine crises, toxicological emergencies, and behavioral health response.
Pharmacology
Mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, dosage calculations, and administration routes for ALS medications.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Normal and complicated delivery, eclampsia, preeclampsia, ectopic pregnancy, and neonatal resuscitation.
Pediatric and Geriatric Emergencies
Age-specific assessment, Broselow tape use, pediatric dosing calculations, and geriatric pharmacology considerations.
EMS Operations
Incident command, multi-casualty incidents, hazmat operations at the EMS level, and ambulance operations safety.
How to Study for This Exam
The NREMT Paramedic cognitive exam is computer-adaptive — it adjusts difficulty based on your performance. Study to mastery, not familiarity. Weak areas will be relentlessly probed by the adaptive algorithm. Focus heavily on pharmacology and cardiology — these are consistently the most challenging sections and carry significant weight. Drug calculations must be automatic under pressure. Use the NREMT Paramedic content blueprint as your study framework and practice with CAT-style question banks.
Practice for the NREMT Paramedic (NRP)
A patrol officer works an 8-hour shift. She spends 1 hour and 45 minutes on administrative duties, 2 hours and 20 minutes on traffic enforcement, and the remainder on patrol. How much time does she spend on patrol?
